STORYTELLING

SARAH BULLEN | MASTER STORY TELLER

Sarah Bullen has been telling traditional oral stories professionally since 2014. In many gatherings over centuries, it was old fireside stories that lit the way. For many years, Sarah has been telling stories to gatherings in the tradition of old storytellers and bards. She tells them on retreats, at women's gatherings, in sharing circles, or during ritual events. These are the stories you will hear ... from Norwegian wonder tales, African creation myths, or old Celtic poems. Stories of Beowulf, The Lindworm Prince, and Tatterhood – the girl who lost her sister’s head.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND CULTURES

Sarah's repertoire includes tales from various cultures, such as Norwegian wonder tales, African creation myths, and old Celtic poems. She brings to life stories like Beowulf, The Lindworm Prince, and Tatterhood – the girl who lost her sister’s head. These narratives, filled with dark forests and dangerous missions, explore themes of life and death, serving as transition stories that resonate deeply with listeners.

Stories That Whisper to the Soul

When was the last time you heard a story that touched a deeper part of you? Sarah's storytelling sessions are not just about entertainment; they are about connecting with a larger community, time, and place. These ancient stories carry messages and answers to some of life’s deeper challenges, bridging the gap between past and present.

The Birth of a Storyteller

Sarah's journey into oral storytelling began in Greece, inspired by her friend Maria Panagiotou, a renowned storyteller. An Innuit story shared over a summer lunch ignited Sarah's passion for this tradition. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning and sharing the older stories that cultures have long forgotten. These tales, with their ancient words, touch the core of human experience, resonating deeply with audiences.

STORIES HAPPEN IN CIRCLES

Sarah's storytelling sessions often occur in intimate, circular settings, where the magic of her words creates an immersive experience. She asks thought-provoking questions:

  • What stories in your life have connected you to a larger community, time, or place?

  • What are the stories that have shaped your life?

  • Who tells you these stories?

  • How do you know a true story from a tale?

  • Are tales even more important than real-life stories?

Denise Levy

"Sarah ran a retreat for our chapter of the YPO and told an ancient myth over a beautiful evening. We were spellbound, enraptured. The process was incredibly tender, rich, and was a highlight of the year’s event.”

 Book Festival Review

“Sarah’s talk at the retreat was the total highlight of the day for most delegates. Sarah is a very compelling and inspiring speaker. She told us a very old story from Norse mythology and really got each person going on a personal journey – just with the power of words. She weaved magic with words."

Westerford High School

“Sarah told the story of Beowulf to our young adult group and spoke about heroes and ‘being one’. She was fun, very funny, and they were hugely excited by the myth and the superb telling of it.”

Maria P

"Wow. I have so many thoughts racing in my head after sitting for an hour and listening to a story about a deep dark forest and an adventure. I felt like a child, but with a very adult story.”

Women’s Circle Participant

“Sarah came to our women's circle and told a story of marriage and love. Months later, it is all the ladies are talking about – the white bear and his chosen one.”
